I heard it can be used for "self-study".

 

Has anyone tried to take 5 days of educational leave at once - which can add up to 1 week of vacation!!!

Shouldn't be any different from taking vacation, as long as you get it approved through the regular channels.

Yes, I took the whole week at once without problem. During that week I will be going to a 2-day course and will spend the remainder of the time working on a research project.

 

I have a colleague who took the week off to go relax on a beach while reading books that I am sure were medically related.

According to PAIRO agreement, educational leave can be used for "self-study" purposes.

And do we simply state the purpose of leave as "self-study" for it to be approved, or is there a more "politically" correct terminology to be used (knowledge enhancement for instance)?

You are entitled to NOT justify or explain why you are using it.

Agreed, you do not need to explain what you are doing with that time (though once, to make the program secretary laugh, I did submit an educational leave request with the stated purpose of "studying the effect of ethanol on human hepatocytes in tropical latitudes").
