Interventional Radiology - new specialty?

Recommended Posts

Word on the street over at SDN is that interventional radiology is going to branch off into its own 5-year specialty, much like radiation oncology did years ago.

It's been said that they are also considering changing the name of the specialty to something like "surgical radiology".

How true is this? It's pretty interesting news if it is true.

They've actually been talking about this for a very long time; I'd say at least 5-10 years this idea has floated around.

The trouble is that IR folks need to be strong on imaging in order to be good interventionalists. Currently, most IR folks in private practice still read images and practice diagnostic radiology, at least part time (it's rare to have enough volume to do 100% IR).

It will be very interesting to see if they can convince private practice groups that IR should be separated at that level, which it very well might be if those IR-only pathway graduates are unable to become board-certified in diagnostic radiology.
