Actually, if you're a med student here you don't need to be certified until the beginning of second year. That said, the admissions package suggests you get a cert. Also, it is a good thing if you know some first aid... and that is regardless of whether you're a meds wannabe or a lay person that's totally uninterested in medicine. First aid and CPR saves lives.
