Hi,

I took JBI 428 last year and I have to admit that it of all the immunology courses, JBI was the toughest. It's a mix of physical chemistry, biochemistry, immunology and molecular biology. The evaluation breakdown was as follows: 36% midterm test, 64% final exam. There were around thirty people (mostly Immunology specialists) who took the course last year and 2 people failed the midterm. It's not a bird course for sure, but I wouldn't say it's impossible to do well in the course. They make JBI428 hard so the IMM profs can decide who's suitable for IMM grad studies and who's not (based on your acheivement in the course).

you took the course and did well? Wow! congratulations. I saw some of their past midterms and they look extremely hard. Is it really that important for immunology graduate studies?

How are the other fourth year immunology courses? I heard the practical immunology is horrible, along with advances in immunology.

I would love to hear your experiences with the immunology program.

thanks

Hi again,

One of my friends worked for a prof who was on the grad admissions committee and was told that JBI428 is very important. Basically, when you apply for the IMM grad program, you'll only have marks from 2 immunology courses: IMM334 and JBI428. They place more emphasis on JBI428 because it is tougher.

The advanced immunology course was not as tough as JBI. On top of the lecture notes, you also need to read one paper per week and discuss the paper in class. Make sure you participate in class, as it is worth 10% of your final mark.

As for the immunology lab course, it wasn't that bad actually. You do have to hand in reports every week (which can be time-consuming) but that they weren't hard to do. The test and the final exam, however, do require you to understand the techniques very well. Compared to JBI428 and IMM430, however, the lab course was easy.

Are you in the immunology program?

Hi

yes, I am in the immunology specialist program but I am always second guessing whether I chose the right program. I am in the year long biochemistry course but it's not too bad this year.

I would like to get into medicine, and I am afraid that I picked a program that's too hard. I do recall you saying that you might have chosen a different program should you have to chose again.

What would you believe is a good program? LMP?

AHHHHHHHHH

I am terribly worried that I will never get the GPA required for medical school. I have a current GPA of 3.44, should I leave the program?

Anyway sorry for the incoherence.

I really appreciate your replies I have really found them helpful.

Hi dogeatdog12,

I would say that of all the science programs, IMM and MGB are the toughest. The easiet program used to be the Human Biology because it was a really flexible program (there weren't as many required courses). However, I think they have changed the Human Biology program now.

Sorry, but I don't know much about the LMP program since they didn't have that program for my year. I did take LMP363, however, and found it to be a relatively easy and interesting course.

Are you in second year now? If you want to switch to an easier program, it's not too late. However, one advantage of a rigorous program like IMM is that in case you don't get into med school, you can do a MSc or PhD, and then reapply if you wish or continue on with research. If you reapply after your graduate studies, most schools would not place too much emphasis on your undergraduate marks or would have lower cutoffs for graduate students.

I'm glad you find my comments helpful. Feel free to ask me any more questions.
