olecranon
Hi there, How easy or difficult will be it to find a job in radiology in the next few years? I have heard from some people that in places like Vancouver there is a saturation of radiologists. Do you guys agree with this? Is it only in academic centers? Will job availability essentially dictate where I end up starting my family in the future if i choose radiology? Thanks guys.
Lactic Folly
Well, a lot of things can change in the 5-10 years before you start looking for a job. I'm not sure how much harder it would be to get a job in an academic centre, but usually a fellowship is a requirement. If you are limited to Vancouver, for example, I do not think anyone could say you would be assured of finding a job there, but currently I see postings for radiologists in both smaller and larger centres all across the country, so I do feel there are options. (And.. does Vancouver have a shortage of any type of specialist?)
olecranon
lol true..although surprisingly Vancouver needs a lot more GPs. what's a good place to look for job postings just to get a sense of where these places are?
Lactic Folly
As with other fields, jobs may not need to be advertised publicly to be filled, and if they are advertised, are more likely to be found in radiology-specific channels (e.g. specialty associations) than a general forum such as CMAJ. However, there are listings for (mostly underserved) areas on such sites as http://www.hfojobs.ca and http://www.healthmatchbc.org.
