lovestruck
Just curious how people selected their university programs. My friend picked biochem because he thought it would give him all the prereq's for med and a decent back up plan in terms of getting a job after school if meds didn't work out. However he hates his program and is miserable, despite doing quite well in his courses. How did you all choose? Did you choose solely based on getting into medical school and taking the courses you needed? Or more on interest? I picked my program out of interest and out of job market prospects when I'm done and I'm loving it so far! The more people I meet, the more I see choosing based on med school or future job prospects and then being miserable since the program is not truly what they're interested in. The Ace of Spades
Well I'm pretty well rounded in all of the sciences, so I was gearing towards a biology degree just because I thought I could get the highest marks there. Then I did the labs in first year, and I fell in love with chemistry! I elected to do a major's program rather than an honour's program just so I could have the extra electives to complete the med school pre-reqs. I'm glad I chose chemistry, because I would be glad to take a job in that field if med school doesn't work out!

I took biochem/neuroscience because I enjoy the topics. However, if I had my time back I think I really would have enjoyed something more number crunch based, like a joint in math/economics or something like that. dr_horrible
I took Microbiology and Immunology because that program title had more syllables than any other Med Sci module at UWO.
UTPEOPLE
I took Microbiology and Immunology because that program title had more syllables than any other Med Sci module at UWO. Laboratory medicine and pathobiology is longer!
future_doc
And exercise science with specialization in clinical exercise physiology is even longer.
thatonekid
Because my program basically lets me take any electives that I want in 3rd and 4th year and I though that would be cool. I was right, it was cool.
mildoc1
Like your friend I did a couple of years in BioChem, and was concerned that if I didn't get into med right away I'd be unemployed or doing a MSc in a subject area I wasn't keenly interested in. I knew no matter what I wanted to work in healthcare so after a lot of soul-searching I switched to Nursing.

AndreaM
I started in biology, because I really like bio in high school and then after first year I realized that I liked chemistry better. So based on that I chose to do a biology/chem joint major.
avenir001
well i wasn't that into biology or chemistry, so i thought biochemistry would offer a nice balance
TheFonz
where was he planning on getting a job with a bachelors of science in biochemistry? the local grocery store perhaps? cinemas? LOL, so true. I did a double major in biochem and CSB at U of T. Really enjoyed biology, and both my older brother and sister did or were in the same program and approved lol
Jacqueline18
I enjoyed all my subjects in high school, but loved biology the most. I went into biochemistry because it gave me a lot of the prerequisites first year for other professional schools (ie. pharmacy, optometry). I always planned on switching back into biology because it gives me more room for electives and I just enjoy it more.

It definitely would have more job opportunities than a Bachelors of science in Human Biology I would think (My program!) bigfootspartan
Out of high school I wanted to do Neuroscience, just because I thought it would have the smallest graduating class, and it would be unique. Then I took an immunology course and loved it. So now that's what I do!
artistintheambulance
After my first year of undergrad doing solely med pre-req courses, I'm leaning strongly towards doing a mathematics degree. I have no idea what the career prospects are, I just enjoy studying it.
MedDream
I'm in Bio-Medical Science, and chose it because I knew I wanted to go into health care. After a general first year, the courses get quite specific and you can choose your focus to be animals or humans (a lot of people from my program apply to med or vet school). I'm finding it pretty hard... but I think studying something your interested in is really the best way to go, instead of doing something solely for a job or because it will be easy. Cnussey
I chose Astrophysics b/c I wanted to be an astrophysicist. I switched to a BBA b/c I don't live near a university and needed to complete the remainder of my UG to apply to med school. A BBA is boring as hell but the knowledge and skills are transferable to any career (it's management btw, not admin work...misleading title).
