I will be in Montreal this summer for work (specifically Dorval...I plan to commute by carpool or public transportation). Could someone please recommend certain 'districts' that are great areas (ie. in Vancouver I would have recommended Kits or Kerrisdale)? Also, what is the best way to find lodging as I am living in BC now.

Thanks!

(Sorry...I wasn't too sure where to post this)

Since you're from out of town, I'll recommend any housing in the McGill ghetto. Specifically, stick to anything bordered by Sherbrooke in the south, Pins in the north, probably Jeanne Mance in the west and all the way probably to St Denis in the east. St Laurent and Prince Arthur is where you'll be stumbling around drunk moist of the time. Cheap rent too.

You may want to try InfoMcGill, which is McGill's information board. It's accessible from the homepage, http://www.mcgill.ca, and includes a section with tons of Housing postings.

This was how I found my summer sublet two years ago, and it worked out great for me. I was working at McGill, so I lived at 900 Sherbrooke, which is this really nice old building right by campus and downtown, for about as much as you might be paying further from downtown, if you don't mind sharing an apartment with 3 or so others (depending on how many others stick around for the summer). I know that this building is a favourite with McGill students, which is why I picked it, knowing that I could reasonably trust the quality. The ghetto can be really nice as well, but the quality varies greatly, and it isn't really advisable to accept a room without seeing it first.

Definately SUBLET. It's nearly impossible right now to find housing and nearly all places make you sign a lease. But if you don't mind living in the suburbs, then it will be much easier and cheaper. I suggest anywhere downtown, ghetto (probably easier to sublet there), plateau (more expensive), or even Cote des Neiges or Outremont which are slightly farther from the action but nice areas and public trans is great in Montreal. A few months back, there was a special on CBC radio about finding apartments in Montreal, so they posted some links on their website:

Finding an Apartment

Locating an apartment in Montreal is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Here are some links to help you find a place to live.

Montreal Real Estate Page: http://www.firstcorp.ca/

The Gazette Classifieds: classifieds.canada.com

La Presse: cyberpresse.alliance-web.net

Unfortunately, one of these is wrong and takes you to Vancouver housing listing, but the rest are good! Good luck!
