Cautious
As a student in med school, are you required to conduct research? I know that it may give you an edge if you're applying to a competitive residency - but do the med school curriculums actually make research mandatory? Although often people do it for the reason mentioned.
NLengr
Yes. Gobs of it. All triple blinded placebo controlled trials. And publishing is only accepted in one of the top 6 medical journals. Seriously, no.
BlackJack
No. But since most residency programs require that their residents do at least one project, it would be advantageous to get some experience. Plus, it will give you an edge for the match IF you manage to PUBLISH a good project with a good supervisor. Don't just accept any project that comes your way. Learn how to say no. Good projects are those which satisfy the following requirements: 1. are within a field of interest. - if you are bored you'll never finish it. Your lack of interest will be obvious and you will not only never publish it, but also not secure a letter of reference. 2. have a realistic possibility of being completed in the allotted timeframe. - if its not published, it never happened. Don't take on a massive randomized controlled trial that has no chance of being completed during your medical school tenure.
Guest copacetic
The answer is mostly NO. though some med schools may required it as part of the curriculum. At Case Med Im required to do an MD thesis. But thats an exception to the rule.
Smurfette
No, you are not required to do research if you don't want to for most programs. How does it help you? Well, all programs are interested in students who are interested in their specialty. It is one (of many) ways to show interest. If you don't like research, then show interest in other ways. I think there are a couple specialties where research will help you - pathology comes to mind. But for most of the more "clinical" specialties, this is not the case.
