But recently, the CBSC has banned its unedited version because it uses the word f****t 3 times (sorry, couldn't find the unedited version on youtube). This song is from 1985 (I believe), and was the first music video on MTV Europe (as some background info). The video is quite cool, but at least on youtube it's been blacked out (in my region anyways). So what instigated this ban.... 26 YEARS later? ONE person called in and complained (News stories: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/dire-straits-money-for-nothing-banned-in-canada-20110114). Many radio stations around Canada have played this song for an hour straight (unedited) in protest (like K97 is currently doing here in Edmonton: http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id=2079835&spid=24698) of the ban on freedom of speech. Is it offensive? Not according to some in the GLBT community: http://www.torontosun.com/entertainment/celebrities/2011/01/14/16893481.html. Hell, Elton John's even sang it. Obviously he wasn't too offended by it! My question is, why is this song being censored, but not Akon's "Sexy B*tch" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj9tOKlcUu8)? I take offense to that (even though he's 'trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful'......).... so when's that song going to be banned? Or how about the song, "Birthday Sex" (don't remember who it's by)... how do you explain to a 6 year old what "birthday sex" is?! (Yes, this happened to me- came on in the car when I was driving my little cousins somewhere- at least he was young enough that... "OH LOOK! WOW!" as I turned off the radio worked and he forgot what he asked! ). At least f****t would be easy to explain and say why it's wrong to call someone that if they were to ask. Ok, enough background, what does the premed community think? How far should censorship go? My question is, how far can this censorship go? Next thing you know, they'll ban books like Uncle Tom's Cabin, Huckleberry Finn, and Underground to Canada for their use of the n-word.... Oh wait....... EDIT: For the record, yes the word is a bad word that shouldn't be used (both the f-word and the n-word), and I'm not saying that they should be used in everyday language. But in those contexts, they aren't being used derogatory- if anything (in the case of Money for Nothing) it's a social commentary of sorts. They replaced a certain word (can't recall which one, but similar racial-tension reasons) and published an "edited" version. They do social commentary on crazy stuff, transvestitism, s & m, the cannibalism case in germany, the English version of the lyrics from their latest song are below, and the music video is porn, n germany didn't censor the song, although the vid was censored when it was shown on tv.
