itimebomb2
Does doing a 5-yr IM + fellowship give one a better shot at getting a job than the 4-yr general IM? If so, is this true of mainly academic centres, or community centres as well? Is there a difference in income levels?
bloh
I may be wrong but from a logical standpoint, specializing will probably lower job openings unless you are able to work as a general internist after your 5yr IM residency.
A-Stark
What? You mean 4-yr general IM residency vs. 5-6-yr IM subspecialty residency?
NLengr
GIM is desperate for people right now. Lots of jobs from what I have been told. Sub specialty internal medicine is much harder to get a job in right now (again, just stuff I have heard).
olecranon
i second the above post. but seriously if you are going to do GIM you mind as well do family medicine.
Steve-0
i second the above post. but seriously if you are going to do GIM you mind as well do family medicine. Not true. They are very different. People come to GIM specialists with specific, often complicated medical concerns. Family medicine is more diagnosis and ongoing care of general medical conditions (soar throat, HTN, well-controlled diabetes, etc)
