Her husband could barely make out what she was saying over the din of the emergency room at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, Calif. “Rewind it,” she said, raising her voice, looking at her husband. “Rewind it,” she pleaded. Her husband squeezed her hand and forced a smile. Over the last four months she often repeated this phrase when she was confused. He wasn’t sure what she meant, but he wished they could rewind their lives and return to the way they were half a year earlier, before his previously healthy 64-year-old wife became sick.
