UBCStudent128
Hi, I'm new to premed101, and I don't really know how to navigate around forums to see if there is a thread on this topic. (Sorry I'm not familiar with these sites) Apart from GPA's and MCAT's, what's a good / competitive amount of EC's a med-hopeful should accomplish ? I have submitted in my application to volunteer at a local hospital, because I genuinely want to experience what a career in life sciences would be. (I do realize realistically, I will be doing very little) But looking at other medschool hopefuls, they seem to be doing a lot more EC's. How much EC's would count as "competitive" ? t0ny
You can't really have an "amount" EC. It depends on the person and how long you do it. Doing 100 different small things is not better then doing 3-4 very relevant and interesting activities for a longer period of time.
Medlor2010
About 16 ECs should be considered competitive.
mavrik13
About 16 ECs should be considered competitive. That's pretty high - I'd consider 13.67 EC's competitive.
MarathonRunner
That's pretty high - I'd consider 13.67 EC's competitive. Then again, if you are an Olympic athlete who has cured cancer in your spare time, you only need 2.
thehumanmacbook
Then again, if you are an Olympic athlete who has cured cancer in your spare time, you only need 2. I thought it you needed to also be president of at least 10 clubs at your university and start an NGO in Africa. Damn I stand no chance
gb35
No one has mentionned the Nobel Peace Prize yet. This is becoming pretty standard. Also, as I found out this application cycle, NSERCs are useless unless you publish at least two papers per summer. Anything less and you're seen as unproductive. My friend told me Nobel Peace Prizes aren't even considered anymore. Apparently you need a "real" Nobel Prize like the one in physiology or medicine. I mean look at the stats. Only 26% of Nobel peace prize winners are medical doctors while 82% of Nobel Laureates in physiology and medicine are doctors. Think about it, if you had the Dalai Lama and Frederick Banting applying to medical school who'd you pick?

Also a reference letter from Jesus is good but it is hard to get. I got one from Obama but it wont give me good marks. Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot that you do need a spiritual LOR - any divine visions urging you to practice medicine, spiritual signs, meetings with the 3rd kind, etc. is also a definite must. LOR from Obama is overrated. You need one from Harper, McGuinty, and your mayor begging you to be a physician.

May I suggest the OMM? Order of Military Merit? Or perhaps the Peacekeeping medal? (although that one is easier to get)

I'd like to point out though, that I was accepted to Dal this year, and I don't have a Nobel Prize in medicine, just a lowly peace prize. I think my Fields medal and Pulitzer helped offset that weakness on my app though.

You want to have a balanced application with a high GPA, MCAT and a good distribution of ECs. Realistically, you should only do as many ECs as you can without affecting your marks. The distribution of ECs should be spread out (Eg. not all medical, not all sports). Try to find a nice mix of a variety of activities that genuinely interest you. Resume padding will show. Don't do it.
