Looking for some good medical memoirs :)

Does anyone know of any good doctor memoirs? I'm thinking along the lines of Perri Klass, Atul Gawande, Danielle Ofri.

Bonus points if they're available in ebook form, and mega bonus points if they're about psychiatry. I'm about to start Weekends at Bellevue.

looking for some summer reading before med school starts.

thanks

Hot lights Cold Steel

Blue Collar Blue Scrubs

both written by the same guy- went to mayo, became an orthopod. really good reads

When the Air Hits Your Brain

neurosurgeon, great read.

Intern

guy talks about his first year as an intern... how tough it was. good read.

Something for the pain: compassion and burnout in the er

very good, quick read. talks about balancing life in the er with the real world

On Call: a doctors days and nights in residency

Another day in the frontal lobe

She's a female neurosurgeon... very rare. good read.

Two I've read that I really enjoyed were:

"How to kill as few patients as possible," by Oscar London - this is a book of humorous essays, but they are all based on his real-life experiences as an internist, and every essay has a good life lesson in it.

"Country calls: Memories of a small town doctor" by Dr. Sid Cornish. He's a local Alberta doc who practiced in Southern Alberta, and he has some great stories to tell. He passed away just 2 or 3 years ago, actually.

Neither of these is very pompous, but they are both very enjoyable reads.

I second "Hot Lights, Cold Steel" by Michael J. Collins. The author has a flair for humour. Also very inspiring, as the author went from being (probably) at the bottom of his year to chief resident, all the while supporting his wife and kids.

I didn't like "Another Day in the Frontal Lobe." The author came off rather insensitive. If you're into neurosurgery, I would recommend "When the Air Hits Your Brain," instead.

"Final Exam" by Pauline Chen is also a good read. The author talks about how poor physicians are at facing patient death.

Hot Lights Cold Steel is brilliant. I finished it in less than a day.

How Doctors Think is very interesting, and nicely written.

I have When the Air Hits Your Brain next on my reading list, and then I want to get a few more while I have time to read.. Most definitely Blue Collar Blue Scrubs, and probably Michelle Au's This Won't Hurt a Bit and On Call.

"A Doctor's Notes" by T.F. Godwin is a decent read. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

He's a retired Cardiologist who practiced in the Vancouver-Fraser area. He takes a casual and mostly informal approach to his book. It also comes with funny pictures.

Highly recommended.

"Rounds with Oscar" is my favorite - It's about this kitty who lives in a senior's home who knows who is going to die and spends extra time with them.

"FOB Doc" is my runner up - it is about a ER/Family doc who goes to work at a forward operating base in Afghanistan, while most of the docs stay in the base at Kandahar.

A psychiatric book that's a good read ... hmm, I don't have one to recommend.

I'll add my vote for When the Air Hits Your Brain. I've read it 2 or 3 times and I'd read it again in a heartbeat. Some of the stories in that book are burned into my brain.

On Call: a doctors days and nights in residency was also a great read.
