atesme
Just wondering... have most people who've gotten into American schools here done shadowing? Or do they recognize that it's more difficult (read: illegal) to shadow in Canada and take that into consideration?
LJ1000F
I have gotten a couple of interviews this cycle with no shadowing. Of course if you have the opportunity it would be great to have, but for how mandatory it is I feel other aspects can compensate for it in an application, especially for canadians
RichardParker
Actually it's not illegal to shadow in Canada. (You can email the The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario to confirm if don't believe me) As long as you can find a physician willing to allow it, and you both follow the guidelines for patient contact and confidentiality, you should be fine. Although it is much less common to shadow in Canada than US. Practically everyone does it in US. That being said, shadowing is not the be all and end all for being accepted to medical school. Plenty of people receive interviews and acceptances without it.
keith_015
My perception was that shadowing was "illegal" because of physician insurance purposes. Nonetheless, if you have health care experience, ie. hospital/clinic volunteering, long term health care facility volunteering, etc., that would help your cause. When asked in an interview why I never shadowed, I explained it was illegal, and I was not looked down upon for never shadowing.
