How & When to look for research jobs for the gap year?

Hi,

I am planning to take a one year gap year before going to med school. Ideally, I would like to work as a researcher somewhere and get paid.

How do people usually find research positions at labs or universities? Do you email the professors or employers directly or are there portals or websites that have job openings?

And when do you suggest I should start doing this if I am planning to work September? How competitive are the positions and how much do they usually pay?

Thank you so much,
