MD/PhD necessary for research/teaching?

Give you two examples.

1) Student has a BSc, PhD, is in medical school, plans to do internal medicine residency, then cardiology specialty, maybe a fellowship, has teaching experience from grad school, abstracts and a few publications, and wants to teach medical students, run a medical consulting practice, run a lab, and maybe do some administration work.

2) Student didn't finish the BSc, got into medical school, plans to do internal medicine residency, then cardiology specialty, then research fellowship, has a few abstracts and two publications, and wants to teach medical students, run a lab, run a medical consulting practice, and maybe do some administration work.

1) is purely hypothetical, and that's the track I'd like to follow.

2) is what my graduate supervisor did, and he covers all the bases you have touched on. While taking some course work or getting some experience in teaching would be beneficial, it's not necessary---enthusiasm, effort and results will win the day in the end.

Good luck!
