Observerships in Toronto as a student from a different school

Recommended Posts

So I am trying to figure out what to do for the summer right now. One thing I am considering is working in Toronto and getting some pre-clerkship clinical experience on the side. I was wondering if anyone knows the process for applying to do observerships (aka shadowing/horizontal electives/whatever else people call it at their schools) in Toronto as a student from a different medical school over the summer. (i.e. is there an application I need to fill out? Training I need to get? Person I need to contact? Or do I just contact each doctor directly?)

I'm interested in this option as well - I'm really interested in personality disorders and I don't know if there are as many doctors working on that over here in London as there are in TO, based on the looking around I've been doing.

Of course if you want PDs, you can just walk into your average psych ward, so I suppose that's okay, and I'm interested in other things too. but I'd like to hear from people who have successfully set up pre-clerkship electives away from their home school.

apply for the u of t psych institute for med students, u get pretty sweet shaddowing experiences in a wide variety of settings, plus looks really good on your cv if u want psych.

Already there :) Applications haven't come out for this year yet AFAIK but as soon as they do, I will be right on that.

Heh, the reason I know about it is because MY psychiatrist went when she was a medical student. She says it's one of the things that turned her on to psych.
