General Surgery textbook

Recommended Posts

if you want to read something from cover to cover, read the GI and gen sx sections in the TO notes (or the lawrence if you're very motivated).

Then there's the Schwarz (maybe not spelled this way) but it's more of a reference volume, probably available at the library. I would NOT buy this text as a medical student.

Important topics to be covered are preop assessment, fluids, post op complications/fever and general post op care. For the specific diseases and anatomy, read according to what you encounter (for eg: if you know that there's a hartmann procedure scheduled, read up on diverticulitis and colon anatomy in whatever textbook/notes/atlas you have from preclerkship or from the Schwarz).

Another good book is the NMS Surgery Casebook:

http://www.amazon.ca/NMS-Surgery-Casebook-Bruce-Jarrell/dp/0781732190

It's mostly oriented toward gen surg, but with space devoted to thoracics, vascular, burns, etc. It's like a readable version of Surgical Recall (which itself is still the best for answering questions in the OR).

I liked this book as a clerk too

I liked this one too. The textbook (not case-based book as the one above) recommended when I was on clerkship was Essentials of General Surgery by Lawrence, which was OK.

There is also a Kaplan gen surg usmle step2 pdf floating around on the internet which is an easy read summary on major topics.

I honestly hated surgical recall lol. Possibly the most painful format of any text I have ever encountered. Still have negative feelings about my surg clerkship like 3 years ago!
