Guest physiology
After residency, what happens? Do grads usually remain in the same department where they spent the last 5 years? Do they usually set up independent practice? Or are they usually sick of working in that hospital as a resident for the past 5 years?
Guest UWOMED2005
Actually, many now do a fellowship. Yes, that means more school. No, it never does end. There's also CME after fellowship. If you don't like school don't go into medicine.
Guest cheech10
Most people leave that hospital when they're done residency. University-affiliated hospitals are keen on academic medicine for the most part, but most physicians go on to practice medicine in community based practices or community based hospitals, which can be a very different job/lifestyle from what you see during residency.
