Mashmetoo
Hi everyone, How important is doing elective rotations in family medicine for getting into family medicine residencies in Canada? Do they want a few Canadian FM elective rotations, or are people generally ok with doing electives in something like internal medicine for purposes of CaRMs FM match? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
Jochi1543
Word on the street is if you want your top choice, it's suggested that you have at least 1 FM elective. That said, I'm sure if you are not too picky, you could match into SOME FM program without doing any electives in FM.

Does it make a difference if your FM elective is not in Canada (i.e., doing one/ a few US FM elective vs doing a Canadian FM elective)? I'm having problems with getting a UT FM elective due to scheduling issues, so I thought maybe doing multiple IM electives will help?

For CMG's unless your 1st choice is toronto or vancouver you can probably get away without doing an FM elective.... just dont do all of your electives in one discipline and/or be ready to explain your choices

So if you want Toronto/ Vancouver, then CAN FM elective will definitely help. Got it. I already got an IM sub specialty in Toronto, and apparently finding a FM elective anywhere in Toronto is more difficult than finding an IM subspecialty in DT Toronto right next to UofT. I never expected that... Hopefully this Canadian IM elective will be of some value for CaRMs FM.. Hopefully another FM elective will come up, if not, I suppose I can get another IM specialty around UT.
Laika
If you're not able to get an elective at UT, but want to return to the GTA for FM, consider other programs. For example, I believe Mac has a satellite FM program out of Brampton.
