Hi! I am second year student in life sciences at utsc. I am confused with my degree selection. I am not sure if i should do a specilization or two majors.

I am considering doing a specilization in integrative biology or a major in bio and a major in neuroscience. I am not familiar with the neurosciene program. Any suggestion/advise regarding courses and difficulty to maintain a high gpa?

thank you

I specialized in Integrative Biology and it was the best decision I ever made. I was able to take a broad range of courses and I was not limited to science courses. In other words, it gives you a lot of flexibility.

ps. if you have specific questions, private message me.

pss. BTW, you shouldn't post the same topic in different sections of the forum. This would do well in the UT section.;)

Hey,

I started out in first year with the intention of doing an integrated bio specialist, but in 2nd year i changed my mind to a major in integrated and neuro, and in 3rd year i changed again to doing a specialist in neuro. The reason is that almost every dental prereq is also required for neuro, i.e. Biochem, orgo...

I also find that if you can get past year neuro exams you can do much better then in bio courses, hence higher GPA.

Could you please let me know what courses you took in your second year (specific bio courses) as well as the electives that you took?

Did this program fulfill all the prereqs for dental school and do you have to do a fourth year project?

Thanx

JK,

If i did a specialization in integrative biology that would satisfy dental school prereqs as well that is why I am confused because i am worried about my GPA and my interest is in both. I would like to go in the stream that i i will do best in. Since you transfered from the biology stream to the neuroscience stream, how challenging did you find the neuroscience courses in comparison to the biology courses?

Would taking the specialization stream provide me with the same flexibilty to take just as many electives as the double major?

Last question, what courses did you take in your second year from the neuroscience stream?

thanx so much!

In 2nd year I took developmental neurobiology. In 3rd I took Neuro I, II, III, Psycho Bio of Aging.

Basically, take every course with Ivy and you'll get a 90 if she likes you.

I'll be honest with bio vs. neuro courses in my humble opinion. If you study equally hard and are well prepared for a neuro and a bio exam, you are much more likely to get a 4.0 in neuro then bio. They don't try to trick you as much in neuro exams b/c the program is so small as it is, they don't want the attrition rate to be high like it is in bio.

One last thing, I think I also did better in neuro b/c I enjoyed it much more then bio courses (i.e. plant phys, ecology, evolution) that didn't really interest me at all.

People say you tend to do better if you like what you study.
