captcapt
Hey friends i was wonder if you guys had any advice regarding surgical oncology. Would one get into this field through a gen surg residency followed by a surgical oncology fellowship? Is there a direct entry option? I really don't know a whole lot about this specialty and any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks
Med0123
You need to do a full 5 years of general surgery residency followed by a 2-years fellowship in general surgical oncology. There are no direct entry option. You will essentially treat cancers within the scope of general surgery (breast, anything GI, skin, sarcoma mostly) and not those related to the other systems (ortho, ENT, neuro, obgyn, uro...) thebouque
And even sarcomas, it depends on the location. Many of them are in the limbs and they fall within the realm of ortho (msk or bones and soft tissues oncology=ortho + 2 yrs fellowship).
NLengr
It should be pointed out that you don't need an oncology fellowship to operate on cancer for most specialties. There are many bread and butter operations done by non fellowship surgeons to treat cancer (ex. bowel resection, hysterectomy, nephrectomy). The fellowship guys tend to treat the more complex cases that require more extensive OR's and have a lower cure rate.
