costar
Does anyone know how vacations work during residency? I know that my rotations are each 1 month long. Do I have to make up a week of gen surg if I take a week of vacation? Could I take all 4 weeks at once?
Lactic Folly
Depends on the school - some give you a one-month block of vacation, others let you spread it out through the year (in that case, you may not miss more than 50% of possible working days during a rotation, including post-call days, to have it still be considered complete). You don't need to make up the missed time. If you'd like a two week block, you can take the last week of one rotation and the first one of another. And yes, most residents try to take time off during the surgical rotations...

Lactic Folly
http://www.pairo.org/Content/Default.aspx?pg=1287 In Ontario, you get vacation + professional leave (adds up to over 5 weeks). Xmas/New Year's is considered separately.
