What's the word on asking the program director for a reference letter?

I've worked quite a bit with the PD at a program I'm applying to. I was just wondering if it's appropriate to ask the PD for a letter. Are there any unspoken rules for this?

I don't see why not. It would certainly be a letter from a well-known person that you could submit to other programs as well.

I asked for a letter from a program director and she said that she would be happy to provide a letter but I couldn't use it to apply to her program as she would be reading a letter to herself.
