Phone Interview for Research Position

So I just did a phone interview for a research position and it didn't go so well. I think I was a bit too nervous. The interview lasted a total of 7 minutes and she mentioned that they were in the process of interviewing other candidates and will get back to me in a few weeks. Did I blow it? Should I send a follow up thank you note?

If you want the position, there is little to lose by sending a followup note, which I do recommend. There, you can say more eloquently what you wish you had said during the phone conversation.

Whenever they say they are interviewing other candidates it usually isn't a good sign. I've had that happen to me twice and both times i didn't get the position and whenever i actually got a position from interview, the PI or interviewer never mentioned interviewing other candidates.

Not necessarily true. I've had interviews where the interviewer has just been honest that they are still in the process of interviewing more people and I've gotten the job anyways.
