14 year old girl comes into emerg (brought by friends) looking very sick with abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. She is thought to have appendicitis. Her parents are called and she is taken to surgery.

 

During surgery, it is found that there is nothing wrong with her appendix...but she does have a huge abscess on her right ovary...Gyne is called - she has severe pelvic inflammatory disease not appendicitis.

 

The girl is very sick and requires admission to ICU after surgery...there is some concern that she may die from overwhelming sepsis....

 

What do you tell her parents?

I'm new to this forum but I have read many of your comments and find you all to be amazing people with excellent ideas and advice. I have been studying about the pros and cons of the public vs private health care systems and am faced with a dilemma. I do feel that a public medicare system is best (due to members of my family being in the hospital this past year) but I can't find any information that describes why private hospitals would not make waiting lists shorter. If many of the wealthy patients leave public hospital waiting lists to go to private clinics, wouldn't that speed up the time for everyone to see a doctor? I read information about this not being the case but I don't understand why. Can you guys help me? Many thanks!
