Jehovah's witness question

Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to tackle the ethical dilemma presented by blood transfusions and the conflict they pose to Jehovah's witnesses. I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this or if there is a specific interview forum but in any case, upon consultation with the staff hematologist at the Hospital for Sick Children as well as the nurse co-ordinator, they told me they had a case where the parents of a young girl with B-Thalassemia refused transfusion treatment for their extremely ill daughter but the hospital was able to go over their heads and give her the treatment by having her temporarily declared a ward of the province. I know that it depends on the age of the person, if we have a legal adult who refuses treatment and we are certain that this individual is mentally competent and has made an informed decision, then as hard as it is for us, that is their wish and we comply. But in the case of children, I'm still a bit shaky. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Nikhila

<title>Primary, Secondary, Tertiary</title>

<pagetext>Hi,

Through all my readings, I've come upon the terms "primary health care (HC)", "secondary HC", and "tertiary HC".

I've been trying to find out what exactly these mean or refer to.

Any clarification would be of great help.

Thanks.

<pagetext>Hello,

I am looking for some infromation on the pros and cons of public vs private healthcare systems. What do you all think are the pros and cons of each system? Does anyone have any links to website containing relevant information?

Thanks!

<title>What happens when you Accept an Offer, BUT -</title>

<pagetext>If a med school offers you admission and you accept, (paying your deposit & securing a spot in the september class), will other med schools be notified of this right away?

I ask this because say for example you get early admission to a school, but still have more interviews elsewhere - could you accept the offer, still do the interviews, and at a later date tell the original school you no longer want to be in their sept. class, if you get another acceptance? Or would you even be considered by other schools once you accept an admissions offer elsewhere?

Please let me know how this part of the admissions process works.

<title>Conflict</title>

<pagetext>I just interviewed and received this typical question:

"what would you do in a situation where you %100 don't agree with someone?"

I pretty much ended my response with the "agree to disagree" mentality in some cases.

Any thoughts on how you would have dealt with this question.

<title>Health Care Costs</title>

<pagetext>Hello all,

Yesterday, I did a mock interview. One of the questions I was asked was "how would you make our current health care sytem sustainable?"

My response was that it is sustainable and that I am against user charges, or any form of privitized health care. I think that increased federal government spending, increasing the allocation of moneys from the provincial goverment budget, should help the situatiojn....basically, making the health care a priority in terms of money.

With this money, i also brought up the point about accountability and transparency.....two things that are needed if our health care system is to be sustained.....we need to know that money is being spent in the right places, and to the right amount.....making sure that there isnt any 'frivilous' spending...this goes for the entire government spending, not just health care spending (re: sponsorship scandal)....increasing transparency will also allow inidivduals to determine which areas are lacking in terms of funding, and which seem to need less money.

I also talked about promoting prevention...creating lifestyles the promote health, rather then rely on a health care system....

Is there anything else that you would add, in terms of how are system can made sustainable?
