Since it it the summer, and I kind of need some money. What do you think of asking my future MSc dept if it would be possible to do any research work for this summer?

I don't think there's any harm in asking and it's completely reasonable to want to be paid during the summer. Worst case scenario is they say no; best case scenario is yes. You won't know unless you ask.
