RGK
Hello everyone What are the prospects for someone who graduated from a Canadian medical school to match to a top notch US residency program ? for example John Hopkins Internal Medicine ? I mean does anybody know anyone who had done this before ? or is it unheard of ? Thank you
Ian Wong
It can definitely be done. It's probably easiest if you are coming out of a med school that those US programs have heard of (U of T and McGill for the east coast, and UBC for the west coast). You will also need excellent USMLE Step 1 scores, and it would be very helpful to have done an elective at that institution. However, another solution is to match into a Canadian internal medicine residency, and then go to the US for fellowship. Canadian residency graduates are known to be extremely strong clinically (we get a lot more autonomy in Canada, and are a little less reliant on imaging/lab tests), and are usually pretty desirable to take in as fellows. Doing a US fellowship can be great for a Canadian grad because you have already got the strong fundamentals from residency, and then get access to all the state of the art technology (much more prevalent in the US) in your chosen subspecialty. Laika
There were a few people in my U of T class who matched to top-tier US residency programs. The Canadian match usually happens first. Practically, this means that if you want to match to a US program, you would not submit a Canadian ROL. (If you submitted a ROL and matched in CaRMS, you would be withdrawn from the US match). The risk, of course, is that if you go unmatched in the US, you've missed the Canadian match. As Ian said, Canadian residency grads are well-liked as fellowship applicants. If your goal is to end up working in Canada, you may be best off completing residency in Canada and a fellowship in the states.

shimshim
Stay in Canada, the rules and regulations of coming back is not in your favor. Do the residency in Canada.
