Tuition comparison

Now that basically every Medical School has been deregulated I was wondering what the tuition rates were across canada. Who is the cheapest? who is the most expensive? I've heard that Ontario schools are very expensive but I was just wondering what the average first year student has to pay in tuition and fees (not including cost of living)

Dr. Love,

Just to let you know that Quebec Medical Schools are still tuition regulated for in-province students and so I believe are close to if not the cheapest in the country.

Most expensive tuition in the country = UofT (over $17000)

Cheapest tuition in the country = Quebec (in province students <$2500)

All of the others fall somewhere in between...with high tuitions already established in Ontario (all are now over $11 000 and I think most are $13-15000).... Alberta and BC are also bringing in higher tuition fees, but I don't have exact numbers.

I think it'd be interesting to post up each med school's tuition costs for the upcoming year and generate a cross-country list. Could somebody post up their own school's tuition, followed by a link to that school's website spelling out the tuition?

For starters, here's a template for UBC's tuition:

UBC Medical School

Tuition and Program Costs

Tuition and other program costs are subject to change without notice, but estimated expenses for 1st year medical students in 2004-05 are:

Tuition fee $ 14,000

Textbooks 2,100

Student Fees 464

Computer 1,800

Supplies 1,679

Miscellaneous fees 201

TOTAL $ 20,244

Further information can be found here:

Some of these are guess-timates, but here's some U of M info:

tuition: $7278 (years 2-4), $7595 (year 1)

fees: $150

books/supplies: ~$3000 (1st year), much less (2nd year)

notes: ~$100/yr (this might increase for this year)

gym membership: $95/12 mos.

If you're at Queen's, here's what the University will be getting from you:

Tuition $13 500

Student activity fee $671.86 ($335.51 mandatory)

Student assistance levy $100

TOTAL $14 271.86

Source: Registrar, Queen's University

We expect tuition to go up by $1 000 a year for the next while (I hope they stop soon!). The Student activity fee includes everything from the Health and Dental plans ($191.42) to the Red Cross club ($0.10), a big chunk of which are easily opt-outable online - no running around campus to get refunds! There's a detailed breakdown of where it all goes on page 22 of the Blue Book. And, the Student assistance levy goes towards busaries and loans.

Other costs (computer, clothes, etc) are pretty much up to you really (and not too different from what you'd spend anywhere else), so I won't get much into there... there's plenty of budget info on the What's Up Doc though. About textbook costs - our Campus Bookstore is student-owned and non-profit, so I like to think our textbooks are a bit cheaper than the other schools, but I can't say for sure.

Here are McGill's costs for in-province, OOP, and International students. These are total costs, including fees (but not books). The tuition itself is about $1500-2500 less than these figures.

For each year, in addition to those expenses shown, add approximately $600.00 for bus transportation and;

Meal cost: $6.00 per meal x 20 days a month - $120.00 x 12 months = $1,440.00 can also be added due to clinical placements.

I really wish I would have gotten in last year under the grandfather clause (so I didn't have to pay the differential tuition), but at least my differential tuition will be phased in. Those poor student entering in three years will be paying the extra $6000 every year (might as well go to an Ontario school).

Hope this helps

Sorry about the formating but i can't get these things to line up

Here's the tuition and other expenses at U of Sask. for the coming year. Although the total amount seems kinda high, note that if a student looks for deals on used books and equipment and buys minimal professional clothing ( enough to prevent people from noticing that you're wearing the same thing everyday :lol ) then he/she can get by with about 13,000 in first year. Still way too much though. Is tuition at Quebec schools ONLY $2,500 ?!?!?!?!?!

I think the tuitions for all medical schools are awefully low, compared to dentistry. :D It's like half priced. Plus, there aren't as many scholarships available to dental students as to medical students.

Don't be too concerned with it. What's more....once you graduate, you're 100% guaranteed to have a job, unlike dentists.
