time for research in med summers - compromise?

The school that I am most interested in (MAC) has a 3 year program which means there will be no time for summer research. Right now, what I like most (at school) is the work that I do in the lab. I'm hoping to go along the med path, but my backup is Neuroscience (research + teaching), because a few specific aspects of this field are entirely captivating. I am particularily interested in PNS/CNS diseases, damage, and treatment, so I've got two methods of attack (med and neurosci grad school), which I think will, in a sense, converge in the end. Although I'll be looking at the same thing, it will be from different perspectives, which are of equal interest to me at this point.

My question is this: Do I [try to] go to the school with the "best program for me" and not have the opportunity for research along the way, or do I select a 4 year program ("runner up") so that I have the summers to develop my interests? In the end, I think that I could still do what I want to do either way. On one hand, I get (what I think may be) the better education for me and I get an extra year afterwards to delve into something that is quite in line with my specific goals. On the other, I gain experience and references from some sort-of relevant work that might not be quite what I want, but may evoke a change in my long term goals . . .

If anyone has experiences to share that might help me decide, they would be most appreciated.

I suppose there is no time in med school to conduct some research _while_ studying? (ha ha)

Thanks!

<title>Bad Scenario</title>

<pagetext>Hello,

Can this bad scenario be turned around?

For someone who is deciding to return to school full time after an 7 yr absence (graduated with a general BA), and looking at the possibility of getting in to med school, but have a record of some REALLY bad grades for science options that were completed back then (2.2/4 - 3/4), attempted Organic Chem but withdrew, attempted it again and didn't pass (I can say that this was entirely due to the wrong study habbits and lack of focus).

I initially decided to return to school to upgrade my GPA to be competitive in applying to do an MBA, but decided since I was going to commit an entire year (or 2) of study (and after an extended period of soul searching), I decided to shif gear and focus my efforts on completing (and redoing, in some cases) the science requirements for a med school application. Last summer I completed Organic chem with a 3.15/4, but am determined if I put my mind to it, with the proper study habits, I may be able to present a decent GPA in my new life as a student.

Would admissions overlook what happend in my previous life (ie) do I have any chance of being competitive in the application process, or am I being delusional in thinking that I have any chance at all of gaining entrance into med school?

Any response would greatly be appreciated.

:)

Edited the title to remove the all-caps and make it more specific. Please don't type in all capital letters as it's tough to read. Thx! -Ian

<title>Academic Upgrading?</title>

<pagetext>I'm due to finish a 4 year program. However, I am considering going back to school for a year in order to gain the requirements so that I'd be eligible to apply to medical school.

In particular, has anyone done this at U of T? Am I better to apply to start a 'life-science' program at U of T or a non-degree application? I'm not sure how the med schools will look at the GPA from this 'extra' year.

Thanks.
