Medically-related experiences?

I noticed that Dal emphasizes "medically-related volunteer" experience, and in the FAQ on the admissions webpage, they emphasize quality of experience (ie, working with "actual sick people" I think was the expression, rather than volunteering in a hospital gift shop).

From what I understand those positions are pretty rare unless you live in a big city. Most hospital volunteering positions I've heard of involve only passing contact with patients (even in the OR waiting room, or in running errands, it seems more like you only see patients in passing). Aside from volunteering to build hospitals and give first aid in Africa or South America (which is nice if you can afford to go), or working in a camp for kids with disabilities (?? does that even count??) what would be considered a quality "medically-related experience"?? Does working in a lab count? What about volunteering at a crisis line?
