Hi everyone, I have been questioning my CEGEP choices recently. I will be a secondary 5 in September, so cégep is approaching very fast. To be honest, I've been looking at cégeps and universities since 6th grade, but I never settled on a cégep. I want to get into honours sciences, more specifically honours health science. Then, I’d like to pursue a career in medicine and for that I will need an R code of 35 and higher. Short academic description : My average is about 91% (not full potential at all : I’m always last minute, I gave up on homework, etc.) in secondary 4 so far (we haven't gotten our final grades yet, it’s probably going to be different then). The thing is, I'm conflicted because I don't know whether I should choose an English CÉGEP or French CEGEP. I go to a French IB school with enriched English courses, in which I have a 92% average. I'm more fluent in French than I am in English, but my strength in both languages is writing. I’m letting you know this because I heard that most works in cégep are written ones. English language choices : My ideal CÉGEP in terms of size, classes and programs is John Abbott, but it’s way too far from my place (1h20+), it's too bad Dawson cégep is super close to my place (10-15min), very accessible, it has a first choice program and it's a good cégep. However, I find that it has way too many students, which will make the student-teacher relationship more difficult I think. It's also a huge cégep, which makes makes me think it will have more strong students. Then comes Vanier college. It’s 45 minutes away from my place, just like my current high school. It’s not the best cégep, but it's not the worst one either. Also, it has a honours health science program. However I don't know if it’s an advantageous cégep for a high R code. Also too many people from my current high school are going there and that throws me off. --------------------------------------------------------------- For French cégeps, I have BdeB, which seems like a really good cégep, but a very competitive one too. It's also kinda far from my place (+- 1h). My ideal CÉGEP would be Brébeuf, but I can't afford it :(. Then there's Maisonneuve, which I only heard of recently. People say it's a good cégep for sciences but I don't know what to think about that. I haven't heard a lot of positive things about this cégep. It's an hour away from my place too. Which cégep should I choose ? There's the whole English French dilemma. I'm mostly worried about the literature course and the humanities course. Do you know if it was hard for French high school students to adapt to English language classes, especially humanities ? Was writing essays hard ? I don't know. I'm sorry if these questions are bothersome. Thank you for reading this and if you have any answer for me please let me know. P.-S.: I don't know if this is important, but I am planning on pursuing my studies in English, at UofT, McGill or a foreign uni.

Hi everyone, I will be applying to the French stream at uOttawa this year (Social Accountability Initiative). For the OMSAS application, do I need to complete it in french? Do you know where can I attach the financial documentation necessary for the Social Accountability Initiative? Also, I come from a single-parent household. Do I need to write an explanatory letter as to why I am only including my single-parent's financial documentation? Thanks for your help!

Hi all, I am wondering if any body has advice on my current problem: I speak French decently well and have taken Core French (NON-IMMERSION) from Grade 4 to my third year of University. My issue is that I don't have a broad enough scope of the language (essentially the vocab) to talk in-depth about things like politics, MEDICINE, science etc. but I am more than capable of having a normal conversation. If I select on OMSAS that I am bilingual is it likely that getting nervous and messing up my French will tank the whole interview/disqualify me? Or would it be safer to select that I only speak English and then possibly speak about some of my french ECs if I am given the chance to (ie. In an english interview if they see and ask about some of my french ECs I can show that I do speak french to an extent)? Essentially I am just wondering what their classification of bilingualism is.... complete fluency like a native speaker? I know this seems confusing but I am just looking for a second opinion. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I am a McGill medical student interested in learning French. I have absolutely zero knowledge of the French language. I am looking for advice from some of the more senior members of the forum who were in a similar situation. My aim is to reach a level where I can have a functional conversation with a patient in French (i.e be able to express myself as well as understand what the patient is telling me). I am not interested in learning how to read or write at the moment. What is the best and most efficient way to reach that level? I heard about the Medical French Workshops organized by McGill. I have also heard about online programs such as Duolingo and Rosetta Stone. What is the best and most efficient way to go about this? Also, how long would it take me to be able to have a functional conversation with a patient in French? Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated, especially from people who were in a similar situation and who have first-hand experience in learning French from scratch. Thanks.

Hi, I'm writing the CASPer test this fall in French. I've been trying to find french practice tests online but can't seem to find any:/ Would anyone be able to share what resources they used to study for the french CASPer? Also, would anyone be willing to help me practice? Thanks!

Hi! I recently asked a prof (by email) to write me a reference letter for my med school application. They agreed but also asked what aspects I wanted them to emphasize in the letter. It’s my first time applying and I have no clue what that means. I thought the prof would know better than me what to focus on (because they can tell what I’m good at?). I don’t want to say « i don’t know » because that sounds bad to me. Does anyone know how to respond to them? Any advice is greatly appreciated. —— Also, for the reference letter, do I just contact the referee through OMSAS (once they agree)? Is It an actual letter or just a form they have to fill in? Thanks!

Stuck after graduation. What to do?
Blue_Sky98 posted a topic in University of Ottawa Medical School
Hey, I really need some advice as to what to do next please I will be graduation in Spring 2020 from an Honors in Biomedical Science at uOttawa. I have a wGPA of 3.81 (and a cGPA of 3.72) so far b/c I really messed up in first year but I'm trying my best to raise it to at least a 3.9+ so I can apply to the French Stream at uOttawa (and other schools too). I'm also writing my MCAT next summer with a goal of 515+. I would say that my EC's are pretty good. The thing is I'm applying to uOttawa's medical school this Fall 2019 but as my GPA is on the low side, I might not get in. I'm just not sure what to do while I wait to apply next year again. I didn't want to do a Master's b/c I truly don't feel like I would have a passion for it. What about doing a 5th year? Can I add a minor and do a 5th year? How bad/good does that look to medical schools? If anyone has other suggestions, please feel free to reply. Thanks! -
Hi, I'm a 4th year biomed student at the university of Ottawa. My questions are: - Does NOSM use a weighted GPA system? Or is just my cGPA? - Is there a difference between the English and French applicants like there is at uOttawa? Thanks

I'm about to go into my 4th in biomedical science at uOttawa and I'm in a French extended program. Here's my info: - 1st year GPA: 3.3 2nd year GPA: 3.9 3rd year GPA: 3.86 wGPA with OMSAS: 3.81 - Applying to the French stream at uOttawa and NOSM - EC's: French/English tutor, pianist at a church, choir, band, physiotherapy clerk, volunteered at a hospital, piano teacher at elementary school, private tutor (very brief), Sunday lesson teacher for kids, president/founder of a club and VP of another, etc. - I live in Ottawa A lot of my EC's are centered around music and tutoring. I don't have 32+ entries like most people and honestly, I feel like my GPA is quite mediocre for med school. I am going to try my hardest to raise it in my 4th year and then write the MCAT (so I can apply to more schools if uOttawa doesn't work out). But, right now what are my chances of even getting an interview? Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi All, So I've been accepted into physio at Ottawa U. However I was wondering if there were any anglophone Physio students out there who could sort of give me an idea of how hard the french is. I have a working knowledge of french and can speak well enough, however I am just really unsure about the course content and style of teaching and if I would be able to keep up with it all. I have never taken a university level course in french and have not been in a french class in 4 years. Just looking for some advice! Thanks
