Kentucky Fried Blaziken
Why? you can prob get the same amount of work-life balance and independence doing family.....doesn't seem worth it financial and time wise
Ostracized
Seems like a terrible idea. What's your reasoning? -Don't want to do residency? Dental school will be as long and as tough. -Not interested? Can't find something within the dozens of medical specialties (and sub-specialties) that interest you? -Not enough money in medicine? Dentistry has lower average incomes and it's dropping, with decreasing job stability.

Fakedoctor
so...............12 years of school down the drain If you want to get into dentistry, look into maxillofacial surgery so he can spend another 8 years in school for a combined 20 years of school...seems kinda dumb for clearly such a smart guy

Now he is trying to get into dentistry. Anything can happen In his defense, orthopedic surgery has a terrible job market in Canada right now. I've heard of stories of some orthopedic surgeons only finally settling into a permanent position 13 years after they had graduated medical school. And not even positions within an urban city. Granted this is one very extreme example and definitely not the norm for most graduates.

cleanup
Think of it as deciding to go into 'dental medicine' as a specialty/residency, but you've gotta pay $50k a year for it versus making $50k-80k a year. Oh, and you're going to be bored as hell in the first couple of years re-learning basic sciences, anatomy, pharm and etc. with a bunch of pimply-faced fresh-outta-undergrads (no hate, just painting the comical picture; you might feel a bit alienated & disillusioned simply because you've gone through all of it already). I wouldn't. Even if you just go into family you will do better for yourself both during and after residency. It's a lot of lost time, expense and a lot more heartache to finish med school and then go all the way back to dental.

cookiemonster99
honestly OP, if i was in your position I would finish med school get through a residency and work. Get some income first and then look at what interest you. It might change in the next couple of years. If you're still itching into doing some other stuff why not look into investing your income? That should keep your mind occupied
z3u2
one person in our year finished med school before studying dentistry. I always assumed he was pursuing OMFS. Lost contact with him since dental school. Just googled him now. Seems like he's working both as medical doctor and general dentist at various clinics.
