That's how the Ontario government operates with its publicly funded dental programs. Making it sustainable and equitable is the challenge. It would either be severely restricted with respect to what is and isn't covered or at a incredibly low fee or more likely both (just as it is for most social assistance programs). It would also incentivize employers to ditch private insurance. To be frank, if they somehow rolled it out it would literally dismantle Canadian dental coverage as we know it. Dentist earnings would collapse without proper lobbying. Either that or over-treatment begins to run rampant. It's not 'neat' for us at all. Some government programs (in Ontario) have fees where you get less than $40 for an extraction. The Assistant is $20/hr and the receptionist is $20/hr. So if you take 1hr to extract a tooth then you did it for free. Whats more worrying is that companies or employees may elect to waive dental insurance plans from their contracts thinking “meh we have government insurance” Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Free handouts sound good but how do you pay for them? Raise taxes, cut programs, etc. And what happens to those dentists who've paid 300k+ for the education and now can only bill a certain amount based on the governments fee guide. But the way things are going, labour costs are going up, taxes are going up, etc. Doubt any dentist would lower their fees across the board and even if someone did, you open the possibility of over treatment to keep the clinic running.
