D00244
Hello, I am currently a grade 12 student with the goal of getting accepted into medical school. I am still deciding what program I should take next year. I'm thinking Biomedical sciences at uOttawa, but Carleton has a Biomedical and Electrical engineering program which also seems like a good choice because it may have better job prospects, in case I do not get into med school. I would greatly appreciate any advice from students who have taken either of these programs.
poorpremed
I recently graduated from uOttawa in biomed and I really enjoyed the program. After the first 2 years you have a lot of electives so you can take courses you are really interested in. I was able to take a lot of physiology courses. Engineering courses are typically tougher and harder to get higher grades in, but I do have friends who took mechanical engineering at uOttawa and are now in medical school. Getting a job with just a biomed degree is pretty hard, but you can always do a masters or something after (e.g. MPH, epidemiology, etc) if you decide medical school is not in your cards/decide to not apply. I am currently taking my MPH at uOttawa and applying to medical school. lugordon
ottawa1234
If you're interested in job prospects, the uottawa biomedical science program has a coop program that begins in your 3rd year. Your cGPA in the first 2 years needs to be above 8.0/10 to be eligible. My friend got offered a job at health Canada right out of a 5 year COOP position. Donald_Duck
Dosent matter which uni, but as others mentioned that program will be much harder. Biomed / health sciences one of the easiest. Don’t let that discourage you, if you’re smart, go for it (personally I applied to engineering too but opted for biomed), with the caveat that gpa is almost everything for med applications good Luck Mr duck
DarthSystole
I took biochem at Carleton, and am currently in UofO med. CU was a great school, had great profs, and lots of research opportunities. Can't speak for UofO, but have only heard good things about the faculty of science. Nader305
Hello, I am in the same position as you D00244. I have been accepted in Biomedical Mechanical Engineering and Computing Technology at the University of Ottawa and also have been accepted by Carleton University in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. I want to get into Medicine School but I want to know from you if you got into either of these programs. Which program would you advise me to get into. Is it hard to keep high scores in these programs as I need to obtain high grades I believe in the range A- to A+ to be accepted in Medicine. Or should I switch over to Computer Science or Software Engineering as I also have been accepted in it as a second choice. The way I looked at it is that in Biomedical Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical and Electrical Engineering have many areas that related to medicine. But I don't want to end up with grades below A- . I appreciate your feedback.
