Why should you come to UWO?

Here are a few of the better reasons as to why you should pick UWO as your top choice for medicine.

1. Our patient-centered curriculum. Our entire curriculum revolves around the patient. From our Monday morning case of the week, to our Wednesday morning PCL (PBL) session, to our Thursday afternoon community care placement, to our Friday afternoon wrap-up, our entire curriculum revolves around people. This is truly a biopsychosocial approach to medicine. In addition, our curriculum is always changing with input from students changing the number of hours in a given day, the material covered in a particular lecture and the placement of systems within each block.

2. Our curriculum is systems based, thus you learn all the relevant information for a system and do not have to recall the biochemistry you learned in first quarter when you are studying a relevant issue in fourth quarter. This helps maintain cohesiveness within the study matter and allows you to see the broader picture and the relevance to your patients.

3. The UWO hospitals are the regional centers for South Western Ontario. What does this mean? This means that all the interesting cases aren't being transferred to Toronto or Ottawa and you get the opportunity to treat some of the tougher patients while in undergraduate medicine.

4. Smaller class size than many of the other schools. This means you won't have to compete to be the one to talk to a patient while doing your clinical methods training. This also means that you can approach ANY faculty member and not have to compete for a chance to shadow them around or do an elective.

5. The cohesiveness and friendliness of your classmates and colleagues in the years above you. Everyone in meds is here to help you succeed and to have fun while doing it. Many of the other schools are commuter schools which means you won't spend much time interacting as a class nor will you form any strong bonds with your classmates.

6. The opportunity to participate in Rural medicine. As a UWO med student you will participate in rural week a week-long elective in a rural setting in Southwestern Ontario where you will be tagging along and aiding (with many responsibilities) a physician in an underserviced area. In addition, one of your clinical placements during your clerkship will be in an underserviced area. This focus on regional health care will help you become more aware of the very harsh realities of health care in Ontario and your role as a health care professional.

7. A faculty that cares. Many medical schools across the country employ the premier researchers in a particular field and ask these researchers to lecture on a particular topic. If you learned one thing in undergrad., it was that great researchers don't necessarily make great teachers. Hence, UWO medicine constantly evaluates lecturers to provide its students with the best teachers available. In addition, all profs have an open door policy whereby you can drop in at any time to ask questions. You can send them e-mails as well. Lastly, all facutly affiliated with UWO is open to students tagging along whenever they want.

8. Another interest for prospective applicants is the relatively low housing costs here in London. Many students in my class are paying no more than 600/month to live alone, while others are paying significantly less to live with roommates. Try to find these prices in a larger city like Toronto or Ottawa?!

Well, thats enough for now... if you have any other things you'd like to add or comment on, please feel free to do so.

<title>Final Decision</title>

<pagetext>Perhaps someone can validate what I've heard about the final decision making process. Someone mentioned that after the interview, the decision is partly based on your composite Verbal and Writing sample score. Is this correct?

<title>Cutoffs Posted</title>

<pagetext>I went to the Western meds admissions site and found that this years cutoffs are now up (www.med.uwo.ca/admiss/adm2002.htm). They don't have the sum of 18 and sum of 21 thing for sciences and verbal any more. Instead, they raised all the individual subject minimums slightly (now it's 9/9/9/P). The GPA cutoff is 3.65.

Best of luck everyone!

<title>Budget</title>

<pagetext>The interview invite from UWO came with a budgeting guide. How accurate is that $30,000 (wow) figure they give for Year 1? Also, doesn't the school year last 9 months rather than 10?
