Virtual Interview Setup - What kind of background is appropriate?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

As we approach CaRMS interview time, still happening virtually this year, I’ve been thinking about what the background behind where we interview should look like. I’m planning to be seated in front of a wall, but my student affairs office has suggested some things of interest can be in your background if it’s not distracting, based on which I thought some photos or artwork might be appropriate.
What do you think? If any selection committee members have conducted interviews virtually and seen such a display could comment on what their impression of this is, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

@short_stackVery reasonable question, we were all discussing this earlier today as well since it can definitely impact the interviewers' impression of the interview. I am probably going to go with a completely white wall. However, I have heard people having some small things in the background and it actually triggering a question from the panel, so if you do have something in the background be ready to discuss since they might ask about it! Personally, putting myself in an interviewer's shoes, I would probably not mind small things of interest, so I would say do what you think fits best in your personality and your physical layout of your place!
