Significant reduction in number of radiology residency positions this year

Recommended Posts

Have heard staff talking today about how there will likely be a significant reduction in the number of radiology residency this year due to AIs like chatgpt coming out. A lot of older radiologists in power are advocating for this to protect their own billings before retirement since radiology billing codes will go down drastically with AI doing 99% of the work. Might be a 50% or greater reduction in positions but was told to expect a major statement later this fall from AFMC and CaRMS.

Doubt it would be that quick. There's no way there will be a significant reduction in radiology residency positions this year based off of AI. For one, there are multiple medicolegal hurdles that AI has to go through before it can replace radiology. Is OPENAI going to take over the legal responsibility for a misdiagnosis? This is also assuming that AI can read images as well as a trained radiologist and that there are already studies out there that support such a shift. Secondly, a reduction would likely not be favourably especially for centers that rely on residents to read preliminary CT scans overnight.

Yea this doesn't really track. This would be making a preemptive measure, without AI actually being a factor that can actually be depended on at this time. There is already so much talk about how rads residents need more support, or more bodies for call responsibility, imagine cutting spots how much that would exacerbate the issue.
