Hi there,

That's a neat little resource, the saug. Cheers for finding and posting it! :)

Did you happen to take the test? If so, based on your responses, what's your primo specialty? I'll give the test a wee go in a bit and see what it churns out.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

Hey Kirsteen,

Yeah I did...it turns out that radiation oncology and paediatrics were #1 and #2. I never really thought about number 1, but have had an interest in number 2...

Lemme know what your test turns up.

Hey there,

#1: Urology :eek (In my limited exposure, I've found it interesting, but never considered it.)

#2: General Surgery (Not a shocker--this is high on my list.)

#3: Orthopaedic Surgery (Uh, no. :) )

Cheers,

Kirsteen

Thanks for posting this link! It certainly was interesting but (hopefully) not indicative of my future career choice. My number 1 specialty was opthamology and it just so happens that eyes are the one thing that totally gross me out!!! Otherwise it was pretty bang on...pediatrics and infectious diseases.

Radiology and Nuclear medicine came out as 1 and 2 for me. I suppose that stems from answering positively about all the questions regarding technology and gadgets, as well as seeing quick results.

Thanks for posting that link.

Radiology

Ophthalmology

Nuclear Med

Never really had a definite specialty in mind though.

Interesting though, since I remember doing a project on radiology / nuclear medicine way back in high school.

For pediatrics, they forgot... Do you enjoy working with children? :D

Hmmm...turns out that quiz was just about right on for me...weird.

My results:

1. Radiology

2. Dermatology

3. PM & R

My number 1 choice right now is actually PM & R, and I've been considering radiology as well...never thought about dermatology, but those other 2 were actually at the top of my list before taking the quiz!

Heck, that quiz is old news. :) It was posted on here nearly three years ago, albeit in the CaRMS forum where mostly med students visit regularly:

pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm25.showMessage?topicID=6.topic

Anyway, here's my top three. Still can't figure out how thoracics, urology, and radiology have anything in common with each other...

1 radiology 47

2 thoracic surgery 46

3 urology 44

Hhmmm, interesting quiz - I'll have to look back on it in a few years when I actually get to make a decision about this stuff. My top three:

1. Dermatology

2. Pathology

3. Pediatrics

Interestingly family practice (my pre-med ideal) came in at #24, right around "colon and rectal surgery". Has anyone had family practice near the top?

Cheers,

actually I'd like to to internal medicine, but at a children's hospital

Is that even possible? By definition, internal med is adult medicine. (I know you can dual board in medicine/peds in the US but I don't think these programs exist in Canada.)

Heh. Family medicine came in at #36 right at the bottom for me. I'm not sure if that's the actual bottom, since not all specialties may be listed. Of course, looking at the score for each specialty, there's not a lot of variability. The first 20 specialties were all within a few points of each other. I don't know how those scores are calculated, but a difference of 3 or 4 doesn't seem like a lot.

Really? I mean cardiologists, hematologists, and nephrologists working at sick kids or CHEO would be pediatric internal medicine specialists wouldn't they?

Oh ok, that's what you meant... actually I don't think they are internal medicine subspecialties. They are actually pediatric subspecialties, meaning you would do your peds residency and then go on to subspecialize much like how you would start with internal, then go on to onco, endo, etc. if you wanted to deal with adults only.

Interesting,

1 nephrology

2 hematology

3 allergy & immunology

Although I was considering these (7-8-9) more before, really a tie b/w radiology and neurology.

7 radiology

8 nuclear med

9 neurology

With the surgery specialties and FP ranking low

I think this is a bit premature since the clerkships will be a more valuable tool for such a decision to be made.

Gastro and Derm were tied for number 1, and tied for number 2 were ER and Gen Surg...

I want to do FM and ER, but I actually love all 4 of my top choices but still have much derm to learn!

At least Psych was last on my list...pretty accurate I say!
