Guest bcdentalgirl
Some of the schools' websites are not very informative when it comes down to the $$$. What are the projected costs for the Ontario and Quebec schools (before living expenses)? If you know the ballpark, let me know. thanks ppl! Guest kellyl20
about $20,000 per year for 4 years
Guest Plug Dis
yeah kelly's right,. UofT was about 16,500 for tuition and about 6000 for instruments, 1500 for books, for a grand total of 24 Gs per year.....whoooooo that's gonna leave a mark. Plus if you plan on going to UofT be prepared to pay up the A$$ for room and board. McGill's tuition is like 10Gs, and room and board is about half as much in Montreal. Guest ubcdent
they just posted a list of fees for ubc dent on their website...it's super expensive...$36000 for 1st year...goes up to $41000 in 4th year....
Guest toothy
hi, just wondering if you ubc folks know what "clinical leasing costs" are? Do you get your own private space to work in without having to fight for it with other students? The tuition itself is not expensive relative to other schools, at UWO it's roughly 22000 + 5000 equipment. We don't lease clinical space nor manikin heads, so we gotta share. Guest kellyl20
40 cubicles ie 40 chairs for 40 students; no need to share
Guest toothy
well I meant sharing with other years... I get to use my own chair of course in class, but have to keep it clean to my counterpart, etc. In the clinic, there are roughly 100 cubicles shared by 50 3rd years and 50 4th years and numerous hygiene/ dental assisting students. They don't get the same cubicle every time, so have to book it with the clinic admin. By the way, if students don't start practical skills until 3rd year, I wonder why there is a leasing fee in 1st and 2nd?
Guest kellyl20
Sask cost is $32th, $32th, $32th, $30th:eek :eek :eek Such awful weather there too and they want to charge this much?
Guest toothy
well, I don't know if it's such a useful strategy to try to apply to cheaper schools. Deregulation is happening left right and centre, places with low tuition one day can suddenly jump by leaps and bounds on the next. Dentistry is one of the costlier disciplines to teach because of all the lab/clinical costs and the kind of money it takes to retain a specialist for instructional purposes. it's unfortunate that wealth is becoming an increasingly important factor for decision-making, but I imagine eventually all schools will level off at some stupendously high tuition maybe around $40k... Guest kellyl20
do not know about other schools but heard that UBC does not pay their dental instuctors very much, more of an honorarium where the instuctors are donating their time for a nominal fee; and look at their new tuitions!8o
Guest ubcdent
I heard from my dentist taht ubc pays the instructors $400 a month.....that's so sad.
Guest toothy
small fees like that just won't attract the best people... at my school clinic instructors are paid poorly as well, and so only those who are doing it "out of the kindness of their heart" will be there. Well on the other hand lecturers are paid pretty decently. That's because these people have to more or less sacrifice their practice to be at school. By decent, it's still a bit less than what they would be earning if they were in private practice... A common "hidden agenda" though, is that volunteers often want to make an impression on young minds, and feed them ideas that make sense but isn't the complete picture. Guest kellyl20
clinical instructors at UBC ARE dentists who had taken time off from their practices to instruct students in third and fourth year. Very very poor compensation.
Guest Mossy1997
UBC pay $70 for each session (like 2hrs etc)... CHEAP!
Guest kellyl20
I would choose a school such as UT where the dental classes are separate from the med classes even during the first 2 yrs. (assuming that tuitions are about equal)
Guest kellyl20
is the tuition for UBC dentistry really $37,000 for the first year? Can someone who has been accepted this year confirm this?
Guest bcdentalgirl
Hi Kelly, Yes you heard correctly. This year, the Faculty tacked on (in addition to tuition, lab fees, etc) $17,000 per year for what they call "Clinical Leasing costs". If anyone's interested, UBC itself has strict guidelines in place that controls the wholesale inflation of mandatory fees. (see policy #71) www.universitycounsel.ubc...icy71.html The UBC Faculty of Dentistry did not get Board of Governors approval for the fee increase. Is the Faculty of Dentistry violating policy #71? Decide for yourself.
Guest kellyl20
BCDENTALGIRL: Thanks for the verification. Even without the $17,000 for the clinical leasing, $20,000 is still a lot to pay for the UBC dental program. Perhaps they are giving the students more dental clinical time now starting @ year 1 instead of year 3 as it had been in the past.
Guest ubcdent
so does that mean they don't pay the $17000, just pay the $20000 tuition fee?
Guest LestatZinnie
i called the admission office and asked them whether the clinical lease fee was approved and the answer i got was yes otherwise it wouldn't be on there.
