1st and 2nd year electives

In the past months, while thinking about a potential career in medicine, I took a stroll through different schools' electives catalogues to see what opportunities lay therein. One of the things that struck me was that Ottawa is one of the only schools to officially offer a large selection of electives for first and second year medical students. If you take a look at the catalogue, these electives span all sorts of specialties: a full range of internal medicine specialties (cardiology, etc.) through the gamut of surgical specialties. I thought this was amazing. In addition, Ottawa protects two afternoons per week in the preclerkship calendar for students to pursue electives.

 

Hearing over and over that elective experience and related letters are crucial factors in the CaRMS process, I wondered if there may be any sort of correlation between Ottawa's first and second year electives offerings and Ottawa's match rates. Indeed, (and hopefully I'm reading the statistics correctly) it appears that Ottawa students lead the pack in terms of matching to their first choice of residency.

 

Overall, these early electives and exposure to a diverse range of medical fields is a big selling point for me. If I'm to enter this profession this September, I'd like to be able to determine, as efficiently as possible, the area of medicine in which I'd like to eventually practice. I think it would be great if more schools could offer similar, formal elective opportunities to their first and second year students. I wonder if any are considering it?
