elective vs. clerkship

I think this is a fairly obvious question and I have a good idea as to what the answer is but just to be sure...

From the few people I have spoken to concerning UofC, they cite the international elective as part of the International Health Program, as one of the main advantages for attending UofC. I understand the structure of the MD program at UofC (from another thread) to involve general learning (classroom based and small groups) in the first year, followed by rotations (clerkship) in the 2nd year, then electives, however, I'm not certain as to what the major distinction is between rotations and an elective, besides the fact that you choose an elective while the focus of rotations are an established set of areas in medicine?

Do you have more responsibilities/duties in an elective versus clerkship-or is it simply that you have an established set of rotations which you must make, while in an elective you can choose a specific area of medicine and in UofC's case, a specific area of the world.

I guess I understand an elective as a kind of residency for pre-MDs with less responsibility, but the same kind of individual selection as to what to do.

Have I made the correct distinction between clerkship and an elective? Any responses would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
