Hi,

One of the reasons that I've heard for the decline in applicants' competitiveness in the second year of applying to CaRMS is wariness. That is, the programs are wondering why no-one wanted you in the first year, (the wonder being negatively biased).

An anecdote which supports the above hypothesis: I know one person who decided at the last minute that he wished to change from one type of sub-speciality, i.e., a type of surgery, to General Surgery. He did so and went umatched, after receiving around five interviews. During the following year he was adamant about re-applying to General Surgery. During that gap year he managed to spend more clinical time with General Surgeons and completed at least one research project. He applied to all Canadian General Surgery programs and received only 2-3 interviews.

Cheers,

Kirsteen
