cost of books and living

Recommended Posts

That really, really, really depends on how much you decide having books is important to you and what kind of luxuries you want to live with.

Books - in first year, you may buy Netter's Anatomy, Essential Clinical Anatomy, Bates Physical Exam, Junquiera's Histology, Robbin's Pathologic Basis of Disease, Essentials of Surgical Specialties and Cecil's Essentials. This comes up to ~$600 + tax with Amazon.ca current prices. But you don't have to get all of these books. Most are available online in full or on reserve at the library. Don't forget about your equipment as well. This will run from $700-1000, depending on what you want to get (and generally what kind of oto/ophthalmoscope you get).

Living expenses - this can be so variable. Some people pay $900/mo + utilities living alone in a one bedroom apartment. Some people live with others to pay $400/mo and split utilities. Some people live in Meds House and have some meals included in rent. Some people get a car (and may have to pay for parking, too). Some people amass a large wardrobe of professional clothing. Some people travel out of town frequently. So, living expenses can really depend on what is a priority to you.

I realize this isn't giving you a ballpark figure. The reason is, you can live pretty frugally or you can live relatively extravagantly, depending on how much you want to go into debt, how much others may be paying for things, or what other resources you may have. But you won't (or shouldn't) be forced into paying $1200/mo for rent, and you shouldn't feel like you have to buy a ton of books.

Hope this vague post was somewhat helpful!
