Applied to UBC, Alberta, Sask (forgot to send a transcript...sweet), Dalhousie (someone lost transcript/mail error?- resent it but was late), Western.

DAT:

PAT: 16

Carving: 30

Reading: 21

Bio: 24

Chem: 21

Academic avg: 83%

interview at UBC: on waitlist... Stressin out! Not that I'd even expect anything from sask, or uofa. Dalhousie...long shot. Thought I'd be decent for mcgill since they look at extracurricular stuff-but need TWO science prof references...how does anyone wrangle that up? I knew one well, and others mildly. I mean, in a class of 500 how intimate can it get?...unless you're a total brownnoser, of course.

Well, for the 2 science profs requirement, it's easier for people in certain majors where there are fewer students, ie. UBC Physiology - 12 people/year. However, one way around it is to take on an undergraduate research assistant position and a directed studies course. As well, by being a member of a club helps too. I was VP of a biochem club which gave me exclusive connections with the Department Head - wrote me one of the UBC Dent references.

I can understand it is especially hard if you are in a large faculty. I sympathesize since I came from Biochem. The only way to overcome this situation is to utilize some of the suggestions I made above.

Just a note: My first year average was a 2.87. I also did 5 years of undergrad instead of 4. So I just want to tell people not to give up. I applied to U of T with a 3.83 (lowest year dropped) which is much lower than the 3.92 acceptance average people are reporting and I still got in! So if you have a disasterous year, you can still do it! I never did a Master's or anything like that. I worked for two years after undergrad, where I worked as a microbiologist and then was promoted to a supervisor where I manage 40 employees. This gave me some really strong experiences to discuss during my interview. I also really think being mature is also to your advantage! I think my strong AA score and interview really helped make up for my GPA. Good luck Guys!

Rick, again with the amazing turn-around. You and Tode are definitely great examples of not giving up. Congrats on your success so far.

I can totally see how your work experience helped in answering the situational questions in addition to the "give-me-an-example-of-a-time-where..." questions. I encourage people to volunteer and work to gain these experiences - something to help you answer those CDA questions.

Thanks Adversary.

I completely agree with Rick. I did a whopping total of 7 years of undergrad: it's been a long journey, but if there's one thing I've learned it's that if this is what you want to do, just stick with it :). Adversary is total right as well: the more things you do (e.g. work, volunteering, shadowing, clubs, etc), the more you have to talk about during your interview.
