Arranging electives & selectives in IM residency

Hello!

I’m just trying to decide on my R1 electives and am wondering if anyone has any tips on what the best way to go is .... i.e. do selectives in subspecialties I’d be potentially interested in to rule things in/out versus do the big subspecialties (i.e. GI, Cardio, Nephro, Resp) in R1 and leave ID/Rheum/etc. for later on?

Also, just wondering what the process is like for setting up electives outside of your school ... do you go through some sort of electives office (like in M4) or just contact preceptors directly?
