smm99
Hi all, OK, so I'm still only a pre-med, but am really curious about this. I've read in a lot in posts about certain specialties being more competitive than others. What I want to know is HOW can I know which specialties are competitive - ie. are there stats posted somewhere regarding how many people apply for residency spots vs. how many are matched? Or is it just an intuitive thing that xyz is more competitive than abc? Is this something you learn about in med school?

0nsp
Follow the link above for the CaRMS website, which has all kinds of stats regarding how many applied to each specialty, how many ranked it, how many of them matched, what programs had spots open,. etc for the last 5 years. For those of you that are too lazy, the most competitive specialties for the last few years are (in order) (based on # matched to discipline/# that ranked the discipline: 1) Dermatology 2) Plastic Surgery 3) otylaryngology (ENT) 4) opthamology 5) radiology 6) urology 7) emergency medicine Those are off the top of my head, but I spend a lot of time on that website. Hope that helps.
smm99
Thanks 0nsp (and everyone else). I was actually poking around on CaRMS' website yesterday, but never got as far as finding those links. Big help!
