Hillary
Anyone do this? If so, please explain why one would want to make such a switch. More time with pts? More chances for research? Chance to become an expert and subspecialize? Incompatibility of being a perfectionist and a rural GP??? Work-life balance? Not feeling confident with vast array of knowledge needed to be a full-scope rural FP? Fascination with areas of FM related to psychiatry? flying kumquat
There's a guy currently in the Queen's Psych program who did this. I didn't talk to him extensively about it, but he was fairly happy throughout his family program, then absolutely fell in love with psych when it was one of his last rotations in his family med PGY2. He said he found psychiatry so fascinating that he just had to learn more about it (vs. doing extra training in different types of therapies in family, I guess). I worked with him a few times and he was very passionate about psych. Logistically, he said the switch was easy to make (at least at Queen's). He had to to redo his PGY2 year. He seemed generally really happy about his switch.
