Oil is big benchmark commodity – if people want oil they usually also want the other ones as well The only way to buy our commodities is to first get some Canadian dollars (that’s what we sell things in). Supply and demand rules work for currencies just like anything else in the world (blew my mind when I first finally understood that). The more people want our dollars to buy our stuff the more our currency rises compared to the other currencies in the world. That’s why as oil rises, all other things being equal, our currency rises.
